Have a loose canvas? We’ll show you how to stretch it tight and make it look amazing.
At ArtWorks of Northwood, we stretch canvas prints and paintings all the time. Whether it’s art from your travels, a family photo, or something you painted yourself—stretching it right makes it look clean, strong, and ready to hang on your wall.
🎥 Watch us do it in the video below!
We added a YouTube video so you can see every step in action.
What You Need:
-
A canvas (printed or painted)
-
Wooden stretcher bars (we cut them to fit the canvas)
-
Staple gun
-
Canvas pliers (they help pull tight!)
-
A clean, flat table to work on
Step-by-Step: How to Stretch a Canvas
1. Build the Frame
Put the wooden bars together to make a square or rectangle. Make sure the corners are tight and straight.
2. Lay the Canvas Down
Put your canvas face down on the table. Then place your wooden frame right in the middle of it.
3. Staple the Middle First
Pull the canvas over one side of the frame and staple the middle. Now do the same on the opposite side. Do this on all four sides. This keeps the canvas even.
4. Work Toward the Corners
Keep pulling the canvas tight and staple as you go. Always switch sides (left to right, top to bottom) so everything stays even.
5. Fold the Corners Neatly
When you get to the corners, fold them like you’re wrapping a present. Make it smooth and clean, then staple them in place.
6. Check Your Work
Flip it over and look at the front. If it’s smooth and tight, you’re done! If you see bumps or wrinkles, you can take out a staple and fix it.
